Welcome to Dallas Functional Dentistry

Some of the services we provide include:

Safe Amalgam Mercury Removal “SMART Protocol”

We are a mercury free and mercury safe office

Dental amalgam or “silver” fillings are made with a mixture of about 50% elemental mercury, silver, copper, tin, and zinc.

Mercury is toxic and accumulates in the body, and any amount of mercury taken into the body should be considered hazardous.

When we remove old amalgam fillings, we use extra safety precautions to remove them as safely as possible.

We are a “SMART approved” office through the IAOMT-International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology.  During the process we protect you and us with protective barriers, oxygen, high powered air filters, and nutritional support.

In 2020, the FDA issued updated guidelines to NOT use amalgam mercury fillings in: - Pregnant women or women planning on becoming pregnant- Women who are breastfeeding- Children- People with neurological diseases or impaired kidney function

Oral Sedation

It is common for some patients to feel nervous or anxious about their dental procedures. Our office has advanced training and certifications to help with anxiety using oral sedation. If the patient is healthy enough, a relaxing pill is given in the office 45 minutes before the appointment. Monitors are placed to ensure the safety of the patient as they get relaxed and sleepy. The patient must have a driver and cannot drive the rest of the day.

Salivary Oral Microbiome Testing

It is common for some patients to feel nervous or anxious about their dental procedures. Our office has advanced training and certifications to help with anxiety using oral sedation. If the patient is healthy enough, a relaxing pill is given in the office 45 minutes before the appointment. Monitors are placed to ensure the safety of the patient as they get relaxed and sleepy. The patient must have a driver and cannot drive the rest of the day.

To better customize and personalize dental care for our patients, we often use salivary testing to give us more information as to the root cause of either inflammation in the mouth or lesions present. These professional laboratory tests are done through Oral DNA Labs.

  • The MyPerioID® PST® identifies individual genetic susceptibility to periodontal disease and enables us to better establish which patients are at increased risk for more severe periodontal infections due to an exaggerated immune response because of genetics.
  • The MyPerioPath® test identifies the type and concentration of specific perio-pathogenic bacteria that are known to cause periodontal disease. Once we know which bacteria are in your mouth and the levels, we can customize a treatment plan that’s right for you. We highly recommend this test if you have gum disease or a family history of gum disease, heart disease, or diabetes.
  • The OraRisk® HPV test can tell if you have an HPV infection in your mouth, which is linked to an increased risk of HPV-related oral cancer. Like most cancers, it’s important to detect oral cancer early.
  • The OraRisk® Candida test identifies all common species of the yeast, Candida; which is known to cause oral thrush in patients with a normal or compromised immune system.

Airway Screening / Snoring / Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a serious chronic disease that may trigger other serious health problems such as:

  • Chronic sleepiness
  • Heart attack / stroke / high blood pressure
  • Heartburn / acid reflux
  • Morning headaches / teeth grinding
  • Depression / Anxiety / Weight gain

We screen our patients for these issues related to sleep disorders and work with sleep physicians to diagnose problems and develop treatment options. Oral appliances that open the airway for better oxygen flow during sleep are options for some people.

Signs of airway problems include:

  • Tongue covers the airway naturally
  • Scalloped edge to the tongue
  • Cheek ridging or cheek biting
  • Small mouth and high vaulted palate
  • Teeth are not in alignment / crowded
  • Clenching and grinding
  • Mouth breathing
  • Snoring

Airway evaluation using Eccovision acoustic rhinometer and pharyngometer to measure airway flow through the nose and mouth down the throat.

The Pharyngometer uses sound waves to measure the size and volume of your airway during normal respiration and upon exhalation. This measures the amount of air coming into your body.

  • The only way to diagnose obstructive sleep apnea is to have a sleep study either at home or in a hospital sleep center. These are interpreted by a sleep physician to determine how severe the breathing issue is. Sometimes, the patient will need to see an ENT, sleep physician, or pulmonologist to determine next steps. Myofunctional therapy, orthodontics, surgery, and weight loss are also ways to help improve health.
  • If indicated or if you are unable to tolerate a CPAP, we are trained in custom oral sleep appliances that can help stabilize the airway during sleep, improve the oxygen flow and decrease snoring. Medical insurance sometimes helps with the cost of sleep apnea treatments including oral appliances.

Laser Therapies

Our office utilizes a soft tissue laser for:

  • Removing extra gum tissue or tissue tags
  • Alleviating discomfort of ulcers and speed healing of fever blisters or cold sores
  • Reducing bacterial infections in the gums
  • Laser whitening
  • TMJ muscle therapy

Benefits of lasers in dentistry include:

  • Many procedures can be done with less discomfort and faster healing
  • Minimal to no anesthetic or numbing in many cases
  • Increase speed and comfort with healing
  • Reducing jaw muscle tension and decreased TMJ pain
  • Reducing tooth sensitivity

3D Cone Beam CT Digital Imaging (CBCT)

We have state-of-the-art 3D CBCT digital imaging technology that uses very low radiation. This can show us a panoramic view of the full mouth, jaw, TMJ, and sinus structures that reveals details that small digital x-rays can’t see. We often use this to look for pathology, sinus problems, hidden root canal infections, wisdom teeth, TMJ anatomy, bone health, and more.

EMS Airflow (Gentle Cleanings)

Professional teeth cleaning with GUIDED BIOFILM THERAPY makes you feel good. A cleaning session is like a wellness spa experience. The treatment is painless and does not damage the teeth. With the EMS AIRFLOW® No Pain device, all you need is water, air, and AIRFLOW® PLUS powder to fight bad biofilm with a winning smile.

Air polishing is a procedure that uses air and water pressure to deliver a controlled stream of specially processed powders in a slurry through the handpiece nozzle. Fine particles of powders are propelled by compressed air in a warm spray and directed onto the surfaces of the teeth. This pressurized jet of air, water, and powder removes surface stains, plaque, and other soft deposits such as food particles trapped between the teeth.

iTero Digital Impressions

The iTero digital scanner takes a digital 3D image of the entire mouth. Not only is it more comfortable, but taking a digital scan for your new crown, implant, bridge, or Invisalign® aligners is quick, super accurate, and uses no goopy impression materials. (comfortable, safe, accurate, fast)
