COVID-19 and your Oral Health:
How taking care of your mouth can help you fight Coronavirus
By: Shira Newman, RDH at Dallas Functional Dentistry
A new study suggests that your oral bacteria play a vital role in complications associated with COVID-19. At our practice, Dallas Functional Dentistry, we stress the importance of having a healthy bacterial balance within your mouth, because of your oral bacteria’s impact on your overall health and wellness. A recent study (linked below) suggests that having an imbalance of bacteria in your mouth, where there are more highly pathogenic bacteria than good strains present, could be what triggers more severe COVID-19 symptoms. For years dentists and dental hygienists alike have stressed the importance of regular cleanings before cold and flu season to lessen the likelihood of super infection and severity of symptoms. Therefore, after reading this study, we can conclude that improved oral health and dental care at this time is not only beneficial to your mouth but can help your body in a fight against COVID-19. While not everyone can come in and get a cleaning at this time, we do offer a number of products and services that can help you keep your mouth and body healthy.
- Ozone Gum Therapy– This is when we take ozone gas (three oxygen molecules bonded together to form “super oxygen”) and irrigate it beneath your gums. This is extremely beneficial because ozone disinfects at 99.99% in only one second of application and is a known killer of COVID-19. This treatment is completely painless and has a number of benefits including killing off harmful pathogenic bacteria that lie below the gumline, helping desensitize otherwise sensitive teeth, and rid your body of toxins.
- Closys Mouth Wash– Closys is a chlorine based anti-microbial mouth wash that is integral in maintaining a healthy balance of bacteria in your mouth. The rinse itself is incredibly gentle and sensitive, and because it is chlorine based, the chlorine will inhibit cell replication of COVID-19, killing it in its tracks. This rinse is perfect for those with bleeding gums!
- Probiora Oral Probiotic– Anyone who has sat in my chair has heard me praise this oral probiotic. If I could have everyone taking it, I would. This is a healthy dose of millions of good bacteria right into your mouth. Now, these good bacteria compete for space in your mouth with the more harmful bacteria. Therefore, the harmful bacteria have no place to latch on to and eventually die out. This product is essential in creating a healthy oral environment and will help prevent gingivitis.
